I completed my 2-year apprenticeshp in Letter carving in stone in May 2025, working in West Norfolk with master carver Charlotte Howarth.
The Lettering Arts Trust (LAT) is an independent non-profit charity and the only organisation to champion the traditional art of letter carving in the UK. The LAT was founded in 1988 by Harriet Frazer MBE as ‘Memorials by Artists’, to connect those seeking to commission contemporary lettering work with letter carvers around the country.
They have since expanded to promote the ongoing learning and development of the art of lettering by offering a 2-year Apprenticeship, Journeyman placements and grants, as well as hosting workshops, talks and exhibitions. They receive no funding from the government or any local authority. It’s why they rely on donations and goodwill from Friends, Patrons and supporters to continue their goal of keeping the UK’s tradition of letter carving alive for years to come.
